The club’s goaltending came in 3.2 goals better than the chances faced, 15th in the league — dead average, behind the 10th-best chance suppression in hockey. A .9064 and 32 wins is a solid season and it is not the reason this club won 110 points.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 222 and he plays deep and large. He sets at the top of the crease, he is square almost without exception, and the frame takes the top of the net away without him having to move for it.
The rebound control is good for a goaltender built this way, which is the thing that usually goes wrong at that size. The lateral recovery is the cost and it is a real one. He handles the puck adequately.
The Mental Game
He took over a Stanley Cup run in 2023 after two goaltenders ahead of him were hurt, and went 11-4 with a .932. Nothing before that had suggested he was capable of it and nothing since has taken it away.
He has never played more than 50 games in a season and has been hurt in most of them. He is 29 and the club has never asked him to carry sixty starts.
