The Finesse Game

The shot used to be the calling card — a genuinely heavy point drive — and three goals from 137 unblocked attempts says it is not landing. Seventy-nine per cent of them came from beyond forty feet, median 54.

Twenty-four assists from top-pair minutes is a reasonable return and most of it is the first pass rather than anything created.

The Physical Game

Six foot one, 219, and he defends soundly and blocks shots at a high rate. Sixteen penalty minutes in 76 games of heavy minutes is excellent discipline.

He is not a punisher. He is early, which does the same job with less drama.

The Intangibles

Forty-six point six per cent of the expected goals, 22nd percentile, and 46.7 per cent of the shot attempts, 24th, with the chances 53.5 to 61.3 against across 1,307 minutes.

That is a genuine deficit in the second-most minutes on the club, and New York finished 28th in even-strength expected goals against. Pelech at the 82nd percentile in attempts and Pulock at the 24th is the pairing story.
