The Finesse Game

The shot chart is the most extreme in the edition. Fifty-eight per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet with a median of 17 and only ten per cent from beyond forty. Nobody covered here shoots from closer.

Eleven goals on 63 shots on goal is a very high conversion and that is exactly what standing in the blue paint produces. He is a six-foot-four man who has worked out that his only route to scoring is to be unmovable in front of the net.

There is no playmaking to speak of. Ten assists in 68 games.

The Physical Game

Six foot four, 200, and light for the frame. Sixteen penalty minutes. He is not a punisher; he is a screen and a tip and a rebound, and the strength is enough to hold that ice against most defencemen.

The Intangibles

Fifty-seven point nine per cent of the expected goals, 97th percentile, in 680 fourth-line minutes on the best possession club in hockey. Take the club effect out and there is still a useful player here.

He is 31, a first-round pick in 2012 who took eight years and four organisations to work out what he was. A hundred and forty-five points in 482 games is not a first-rounder’s career, and the last two seasons are the best version of him there has been.
