The Physical Game
Six foot three, 209, and technically excellent — he was, for several years, the most gifted goaltender in the league by reputation and the most poorly supported in practice.
The style is compact and positional. He does not fight pucks, he does not over-commit, and the rebound control is good. What has faded is the athletic recovery: the second save on a broken play is not what it was five years ago.
The Mental Game
A decade in Anaheim behind teams that conceded more than almost anyone, without ever visibly giving up on it. That is the qualification he brings.
Over his last ten appearances, .863 on 240 shots — a genuinely poor finish, and the second starter in this book to end a season that far under his own standard.
The Intangibles
Detroit’s goaltending came in seven goals worse than the chances it faced, on a club that finished 23rd in even-strength expected goals against. The club also under-finished by fourteen. Both ends of the ice let it down and the standings said the same thing twice.
