Calgary Flames Left Wing #86

Twenty goals, and a shot chart drifting the wrong way at exactly the wrong age.

Last Season

Twenty goals and 18 assists in all 82 games — 38 points, minus-nine, at 16:55 a night. A hundred and forty-two shots on goal.

The Finesse Game

A quick, skilled winger who has never quite become the player the fourteenth pick implied. Two hundred and forty-five career points in 497 games is a second-line rate and he has been on his second organisation for two seasons of it.

The shooting is respectable without being sharp: 40 per cent of his unblocked attempts inside twenty feet, median 25. Nineteen goals from that, which is a fair conversion. He is not the problem on this roster.

The Physical Game

Six foot even and 186 pounds, and it is the ceiling. Twenty-eight penalty minutes in 82 games. He does not initiate contact and cannot hold a wall against a top-four defenceman, so his game depends on getting to open ice — which on a club this poor is not often available.

The Intangibles

The best of a bad set of forward numbers: 48.4 per cent of the expected goals, 39th percentile, and 49.6 per cent of the shot attempts, 53rd, across nearly 1,100 minutes.

Seven points in his last ten, four of them goals. He is 26, and a twenty-goal winger who breaks even on the shot clock is a perfectly good third piece on a good team. Calgary is not one, and that is the entire difficulty with assessing anybody here.
