This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
55 games, 36-17-2, a .9122 save percentage and a 2.58 goals-against average with 4 shutouts on 1,606 shots faced.
Thirty-six wins on the Presidents’ Trophy winner, and the club’s goaltending came in 0.2 goals better than the chances it faced — fifteenth in the league. The .9122 is nine points below his own career .9209 and it is the worst of his five seasons.
The Physical Game
He is 6-1 and 199 and plays an aggressive, athletic game, challenging the shooter at the top of the crease and recovering across it faster than almost anybody in the league.
Fifteen career shutouts in 213 games. He is small for a modern goaltender and compensates entirely with movement; when he is right, nothing gets past the first save. He handles the puck well and is willing to leave the net.
The Mental Game
Rebound control is the part that varies — the aggressive depth means more loose pucks than a deeper goaltender allows, and last season more of them went in.
He tracks through traffic as well as anybody. Two seasons at .9346 and .9162, then .9122, is the shape of a goaltender whose method depends on the legs, and he is 28.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick in 2014 out of Moscow, five seasons, 213 games and 135 wins, all of it for one organisation. He has a Vezina Trophy.
He is 28 and won thirty-six games in a season his club got 0.2 goals of value from its crease. Both of those sentences are true and the second one is why this chapter reads the way it does.
