The Finesse Game
Twenty-five points is more than anyone expected and it does not survive inspection. A hundred and seventy-two unblocked attempts from a median of 50 feet, eight per cent of them inside twenty, and eight went in. He shoots from the blue line because that is where he stands.
The skating is the limitation. At his dimensions the first two strides are slow, and a forward who gets a step on him keeps it.
The Physical Game
The tallest man in this book. Six foot eight and 228 pounds with a reach that ends plays before they start, and he uses it — 63 penalty minutes, a cleared crease, and nobody enjoying the front of his net.
When he can get his stick on a puck he is enormously effective. The trouble is arriving.
The Intangibles
The numbers are the harshest in this section and they are not close. Forty-two and a half per cent of the expected goals while he was on the ice — fifth percentile in the league — with the expected goals running 42.7 to 57.9 against across 1,180 minutes. That is a full season of evidence and it says the ice tilted badly whenever he was on it.
The context is a poor Chicago team and heavy defensive-zone deployment. It is not enough context to explain a gap that size.
He is 25, a hundred and eighty-eighth overall pick who has made himself into an NHL defenceman by being unignorably large. That is a genuine achievement. It is also, on this evidence, the whole of it.
