The Finesse Game
A shooter’s instincts and a shooter’s willingness — 55 shots in 43 games from a fourth-line role, nine of them in. The median attempt came from 31 feet, which is a little far out for a player of his size, and he is at his best arriving late into space rather than working the interior.
The Physical Game
Six foot even, 199, and he competes without being physical. Thirty-four penalty minutes is more than his game suggests and most of it is scrappiness rather than punishment.
The Intangibles
His on-ice numbers are the most extreme in this section and the least trustworthy. In 458 five-on-five minutes the goals went 32 for and 12 against. The expected goals in the same minutes: 18.4 and 17.7 — essentially even.
That is a twenty-goal swing in a quarter of a season, which is not a player driving results, it is variance standing in a good light. His actual rate — 51 per cent of the expected goals, 62nd percentile — is a decent fourth-liner and nothing more.
Take the plus-six and the 32-12 out of the discussion and what remains is an undrafted 26-year-old who has earned a look. That is the honest version and it is still a good outcome.
