This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
7 goals and 7 assists in 51 games for Chicago — 14 points at 13:43 a night, minus-28, with 14 penalty minutes.
The season before he had 54 points playing alongside Connor Bedard, and the collapse from one to the other is as steep as anything in this edition. He was not qualified in the summer.
The Finesse Game
54 attempts in 51 games and 7 goals. The shot has never been the point.
The passing is the skill and it is real — 82 assists in 317 NHL games, and the 2023-24 season was built on finding a rookie centre in space. What he has not shown is the ability to create anything when the man beside him cannot.
The Physical Game
6-0 and 190 and light. He does not forecheck with force and he does not win pucks on the wall.
14 penalty minutes in 51 games. He is not involved in the physical half of the game and the defensive detail has been an ongoing criticism.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick in 2018 out of Switzerland, and 317 games and 130 points, all of it in Chicago on hockey teams that won very little — a career minus-129.
He is 26 and San Jose signed him in the summer. It is a low-cost bet that a 54-point season two years ago said something true about him.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 3 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 637 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 65 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.
Usual linemates
2024-25 with CHI · 594 minutes at five-on-five
- Ryan Donato27%
Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2024-25
- The club
- CHI took 43.2% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 44.0% — 0.8 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third line, 594 minutes at five-on-five — 22nd percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connor Bedard | 37.2% | 47.6% | 41.8% |
| Alex Vlasic | 38.6% | 46.7% | 42.6% |
| Connor Murphy | 37.5% | 46.8% | 46.9% |
37.2% together, 47.6% for him apart and 41.8% for Bedard apart. Both were better apart than together — the pairing was doing neither of them any favours.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
