The Finesse Game
He shoots more than anyone here and from the wrong ice. Two hundred and eighty-seven unblocked attempts, only 32 per cent from inside twenty feet, median 29 — and eighteen goals out of it.
The release is quick and the hands are good in tight when he gets there. The habit is to settle for the shot that is available rather than work for the one that scores, which at 23 is fixable and has not been fixed.
Twenty-seven assists says the passing is the more reliable half.
The Physical Game
Five foot ten and 183 pounds, and it is a real constraint. Thirty-two penalty minutes. He does not win pucks on the wall and he does not get to the net front against men who do not want him there, which is precisely why the shots come from twenty-nine feet.
The Intangibles
The minus-29 overstates it and the underlying numbers do not rescue him: 46.1 per cent of the expected goals, 19th percentile, with the expected goals 42.6 to 49.8 against across a thousand minutes.
He was the thirteenth pick in 2021 and he is the leading scorer on a bad team, which is a genuinely awkward place to be assessed from. Ten points in his last ten games.
The talent is not the question. Whether a hundred and eighty-three pound winger can get to the ice where his shot is worth something is the entire question.
