Last Season

55 appearances, 19-25-11, a 2.82 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage with 3 shutouts — above the league median of .896, behind a club that finished 31st in even-strength expected goals against.

The Physical Game

6-3, 191, and technically the most polished goaltender in this section of the book. He is square, economical, and rarely out of position, which is the style that survives a heavy workload behind a bad defence.

Rebound control is good. Against the volume Chicago concedes that matters more than raw athleticism, and he has enough of the latter to survive the broken plays.

The Mental Game

This is the part worth writing about. He faced more dangerous chances than almost any goaltender in the league, lost 25 games, and finished the season above the league median in save percentage.

Over his last 10 appearances, .878 on 288 shots — a poor finish, and the season was long enough to explain it without excusing it.

The Intangibles

He was the thirteenth pick in 2019, had a difficult few years in Florida for reasons that had nothing to do with goaltending, and has come out the other side as a genuine NHL starter.

Chicago’s goaltending finished 4 goals better than the chances it faced would predict, which on a team that allowed 275 goals is the only line in the club’s ledger that is not damning. Knight and Soderblom between them took a historically bad defensive season and made it merely bad.

He is 25. Of everything on this roster, he and Bedard are the 2 things worth keeping.
