Last Season
Eight goals and 21 assists in 81 games, plus-nine, at 21:39 a night. One thousand five hundred and fourteen five-on-five minutes, more than any player on the roster.
The Finesse Game
For a man of his dimensions the skating is genuinely good — long, easy strides that eat ice without looking quick. He can walk the puck out of his own end and he rarely panics under a forecheck.
The production is the disappointment. Twenty-nine points from a first overall pick playing top-pair minutes in his fourth full season is a modest return, and the shot is not going to add to it: 61 per cent of his attempts from beyond forty feet, median 47, eight goals.
He makes the right pass. He does not often make the one that breaks a defence.
The Physical Game
Six foot six, 226, and sixteen penalty minutes in 81 games. That is the report in a single number. He defends with reach and position and almost never uses his size to end a play or clear a man from the crease.
For a defenceman built like this, that is the gap between what he is and what he could be.
The Intangibles
The on-ice results are respectable and unremarkable: 50.6 per cent of the expected goals, 59th percentile, with the goals 68-61 in his favour on the heaviest workload here.
He is 23, which is the fair defence — defencemen mature late and 323 games at his age is a lot. But the first pick in a draft is supposed to become something, and four seasons in, the something has not arrived. No points in his last ten games.
