Last Season

Two goals and twelve points in 59 games, plus-four, on fourteen minutes a night with 58 penalty minutes. He played 31 percent of his five-on-five time with Hutson, which is as close to a settled partnership as that pairing had.

The Finesse Game

Not much of one. Seven goals in 171 career games, no power-play role, and a puck-moving game that is functional rather than clean — he will make the simple pass and occasionally make it late.

The skating is his best attribute and it is a real one. He is quick in all directions, which lets him defend the rush and recover when his partner goes.

The Physical Game

Six feet and 207, and he plays heavier. He finishes checks, engages in the corners, and is happy to fight. On a pairing with a 162-pound defenceman, that division of labour is not an accident.

The Intangibles

A second-round pick out of the college route who has become a useful bottom-pairing defenceman without ever looking like more than that.

At twenty-four, his role is defined by what his partner needs rather than by what he does. That is a real job on this particular team, and it is also the kind of job that disappears when a club acquires a better version of him.
