Seventeen games, a .909 save percentage, a 2.43 goals-against average and one shutout, going 9-6-2. Those are the best numbers of any goaltender on the roster, in by far the smallest sample.
The Physical Game
Six-one and thickly built, which is small by modern standards and means he plays a more aggressive, athletic style than the man ahead of him. He comes out to cut down angles and relies on quickness rather than size to cover the net.
The glove is the standout tool — quick and reliable, and shooters found out quickly that the top corner on that side was not available.
What is untested is the rest. Seventeen games against a mixed schedule tells you a goaltender can play; it does not tell you what happens across sixty starts, or when he loses four in a row.
The Mental Game
Composed, by the available evidence. He was a college goaltender two seasons ago and did not look out of place, which is not a small thing at twenty-one.
The Intangibles
A third-round pick who has moved faster than anyone projected, on a team that already has two goaltenders and no obvious room.
The sample is seventeen games and it should be read as seventeen games. What it establishes is that the club now has three goaltenders and a decision, which is a far better problem than the one it had two years ago.
