Two goals and five assists in 34 games, even in plus-minus, at 16:08 a night. His first NHL season.
The Finesse Game
A puck-mover by trade and not yet by result. The skating is good and the outlet pass is quick, which is the whole reason a third-round pick is playing sixteen minutes a night at 21.
Forty-five unblocked attempts, two goals, median distance 54 feet and two per cent from inside twenty. He is a long way from the net and staying there.
Five points in his last ten, which is more than the season rate.
The Physical Game
Six foot even, 190, and slight for the position. Four penalty minutes in 34 games. There is no defensive-zone physicality yet and it is the thing that will decide whether he stays.
The Intangibles
Five hundred and thirteen minutes and the numbers say very little: 46.8 per cent of the expected goals, 25th percentile, with the goals 18-17 and the expected goals 17.9 to 20.4. Below the line on a club where everybody was below the line.
He is 21, arrived from Vancouver as part of a trade, and is one of three young defencemen Calgary is trying to develop at once on a team with no cover for any of them.
