The Finesse Game

The shot chart is the encouraging part and it is genuinely encouraging. Fifty-three per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet with a median of 18 — the shortest average distance of any Calgary forward.

Eleven goals came out of it, which is a poor conversion from good ice, and that is a finishing problem rather than a positioning one. Those are the better kind to have at 24.

The passing is fine and unspectacular. Thirteen assists in 74 games.

The Physical Game

Six foot even and 178 pounds, which is light for a forward who plays where he plays. Twenty-two penalty minutes. He gets to the net front and then gets moved out of it, which is presumably why so many of those inside shots did not go in.

A summer of weight would change more for him than for almost anybody on this roster.

The Intangibles

The results were middling on a poor team: 47.5 per cent of the expected goals, 31st percentile, though the shot attempts at 50.3 per cent — 60th percentile — were among the better forward marks here.

He is 24, a first-round pick, 191 games in with 86 points. Two goals in his last ten games from two points, so the finishing came and went.

There is a real player in here. He is standing in the right place and needs to be able to stay there.
