The Physical Game
Six foot even, 205, and small — he plays a compact, aggressive game and challenges further out than most, which is the only real option at his height.
The puckhandling is excellent, among the best of any goaltender in the league, and on a club that is forechecked as hard as this one that is a genuine asset.
The Mental Game
He has been a starter, a backup, a waiver claim and a starter again across four organisations, and has never quite been trusted with a net for two seasons running.
The Intangibles
A .8961 against Askarov’s .8829 in seven fewer appearances, and a 2.87 goals-against average against a 3.63, behind the same defence.
That is a substantial gap, and it is the second club in this edition — Seattle is the other — where the established young starter was outplayed all season by the veteran nobody was talking about.
San Jose’s goaltending finished twenty goals worse than the chances it faced regardless, which is the fourth-worst mark in the league and the single largest reason a team with Celebrini, Smith and Misa conceded 190 goals at five-on-five.
He is 30, a second-round pick, and the better goaltender on this roster right now. That is not the same as being the future of it.
